Resistive linear potentiometers have a long history of use in industrial applications, but suffer from mechanical contact wear. The benefits of non-contact measurement technologies are clear. But the higher price point and non-compatible form factor of existing non-contact feedback were barriers that made replacing linear pots difficult.
